Maintenance Tip #1: Wash Your Hot Tub Cover Frequently.

If you don’t use your hot tub very often, which means your hot tub cover won’t be moved around very often, then the surface of the hot tub cover will collect dust. To avoid these natural elements from damaging your hot tub cover, it’s best to rinse your hot tub cover with water every 20-25 days, and then just use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the dirt off the cover.

Maintenance Tip #2: Vinyl Protecter.

As mentioned above, most of the hot tub covers are made of vinyl, so when you are done with maintenance tip #1, you can spray some vinyl protector on your hot tub cover properly. The vinyl protector will protect your hot tub cover from cracking for some reason.

Maintenance Tip #3: Springtime Precautions

When spring comes, if your tub is placed near trees, the sap from these trees will drip on your hot tub cover. When this happens, please don’t be in a hurry, you can use vegetable oil or butter to clean up this sap.

The method is simple, apply some vegetable oil around the sap and after a few moments you will see that the vegetable oil softens the sap and you can use a soft bristle brush to brush off the sap.

Maintenance Tip #4: Summertime Precautions

Summer weather is always hard to endure, and this is the same for hot tub covers, the strong sunlight may cause your hot tub cover to deteriorate and crack, so you can take the following methods to protect your hot tub cover.

You can use UV protection spray, which can effectively prevent UV rays from damaging your hot tub cover.

Maintenance Tip #5: Winter Precautions

In winter, the chances of moldy hot tub cover are far greater than other seasons, you may need to buy some corresponding anti-mold cleaner. And you not only need to pay attention to the outer surface of the cover, but also need to open the cover to see if the inside is moldy, and at the same time give your bathtub ventilation.

Another thing you need to pay attention to is that you need to clean up the snow in time, if the snow is too thick, it may crush your hot tub cover or make your hot tub cover deformed.

Check if the color and size of your hot tub cover are the same as the color and size you need when you order.

Step 2:Locate Hardware Pouch.

Once you have opened the package, there is usually a small pouch containing the necessary screws and latches in the gap between the hot tub cover and the outer packaging, please find this pouch.

Step 3: Put the Hot Tub Cover on the Spa.

Once you have completed the above two steps, you can carry your hot tub cover on the top of your tub.

Please note that when you prevent the hot tub cover, check that it is placed in the right direction.

You also need to check that the size of your hot tub cover is suitable for your tub, usually the hot tub cover will be a little bit bigger than your tub.

And you need to check that the skirt of your hot tub cover will cover your tub.

Step 4: Determine the Location and Number of Latch.

Your hot tub cover will have some straps on it, make sure you have the number of straps.

Open your hardware pouch (mentioned above, the one with the latches and screws), take out one latch, snap it to the latch on the straps of your hot tub cover. Then pull down on the latch until the straps are almost taut, and then snap the latch to the tub wall, using a pen to mark the location of the latch screws on the tub wall.

Repeat this step until you have identified screw locations for all the strap latches.

Once you have located all the locking screws, use a tool to make the screw holes in your tub wall.

Step 5: Installation of Latches.

Install each latch with the screws, which generally have two screw hole positions.

Step 6:  Check the Hot Tub Cover Works Properly.

Attach all straps on the hot tub cover to the latches, then try to use a little force to see if you can lift the hot tub cover to verify that the latches are installed correctly. If the latches are loose, tighten these latches.

Then unlock the latches and open the hot tub cover to check if it can be folded properly.

If all of the above steps are okay, then your hot tub cover is installed.

Replace the Hot Tub Cover

As mentioned above how the hot tub cover is installed, replacing it is only two more steps than it is.

Remove the old hot tub cover and measure the size of the cover or the size of the tub. ( If you don’t know the size of the hot tub cover.)

For measurements you can check Hot Tub Cover Size, Weight, Thickness, Taper, etc. above.

Step 2:

Remove the latches of the old hot tub cover from the wall of the tub. (If you buy a new hot tub cover that is not the same model as the old one)

Step 4: Adhere the vinyl and the hot tub cover.

Place the vinyl over the area of the hot tub cover that needs to be repaired, and press down to make a tight bond.

This is all that is needed to make the repair.

Hot Tub Cover DIY

You may think that purchasing a hot tub cover is a significant expense, is it possible to make your own hot tub cover? The answer is yes, you can make your own hot tub cover yourself. The article will cover a home made method of making a rolled hot tub cover.

First you need to determine the size of your hot tub, if you have the size of the hot tub then you don’t need to measure it, but if you don’t know the size of your hot tub, you need to measure the size of your own hot tub first, the measurements can be referred to above Hot Tub Cover Size, Weight, Thickness, Taper, etc.

After you have the size of your hot tub, you need to prepare these following materials.

  1. Rubber mat, the rubber mat size according to the size of your hot tub to prepare, preferably divided into two, for example, yout hot tub size is 8×8 feet, then you need to prepare 2 pieces of 4×8 feet of rubber mat, preferably can be 3-5 inches larger.
  2. Wooden sticks, 8 feet long, 3 inches in width and 2 inches in height.
  3. Wood paint, used to paint the wooden sticks to prevent mold and rot from getting into the water.
  4. Waterproof strong adhesive tape, 3-4 inches in width.
  5. Several 1 & 5/8 screws with stainless steel washers.
  6. 8 straps and latches.( If you need to secure the hot tub cover to the tub to prevent it from being blown away by high winds.)

To make it easier for you to better understand how to make a hot tub cover, I will use a hot tub that is 8×8 feet in size as an example.

At this point our tub is 8×8 feet, then the rubber mat we use to cover the tub must be larger than the tub, I would recommend using two 4.5×9 feet rubber mats, with the wooden stick just being 8 feet in length.

Step 1: Linking two rubber mats.

Place two pieces of rubber mats parallel to each other, do not overlap, splice them together and use tape to stick them together along the splice seam, you can refer to the schematic below.

When the front side is pasted, please don’t forget to follow this method to paste the reverse side once again.

Step 2: Paint every side of the wooden sticks with wood paint

If you have purchased untreated sticks, always remember to paint every side of the stick, this is to give your sticks a longer life.

After painting each side, please wait for the sun to dry the paint before painting the other side of the stick. Then repeat this step until you have painted each side of the stick.

Step 3: Attach the sticks to the rubber mats

At this point, please place these sticks flat on the ground parallel to each other, and then place the rubber mat on the top of the sticks. You need to pay attention to one detail, the wooden sticks must be perpendicular to the joints of the two rubber mats.

Don’t start placing the sticks from the edge of the rubber mat, make sure to leave some space, you can refer to the schematic diagram below for placement. The distance between the sticks should ideally be 6 inches.

Once you have measured the gap between the sticks with a ruler, you can use the screws to fix the rubber mats to the sticks, please don’t forget to put the washers between the screws and the rubber mats.

Step 4: Cut out 4 seams

At this point, you have a large portion of your hot tub cover completed! Victory is in sight!

Because you bought the rubber mat bigger than your tub, If you now place the hot tub cover on the tub, you will find that the big out part doesn’t have a way to naturally sag, then this is the part where you need to cut out a slit in the middle of the four right angles of the rubber mat, the length of the slit is roughly 4-5 inches.

You can refer to the dotted lines of the four corners of the schematic below to cut it out.

DIY your hot tub cover 3

Step 5: Secure the straps and install the latches.

If you want to better secure the hot tub cover to your tub, you can sew straps to the rubber mat at the eight locations in this schematic below and punch holes in the tub wall to install latches. Be careful that the straps and latches are taut and not too loose, or in windy weather, the rubber mat will blow up, which will affect your tub’s insulation.
